Tanning Tips

Why should I use indoor tanning lotion?
Feb 13, 2017 06:02AM PST
You should always use an indoor tanning lotion. All of SunScape's tanning lotions contain vitamins, natural oils, minerals, anti-oxidants, natural botanical extracts, and aloe vera give your skin the extra moisture needed to achieve a deeper tan that will last longer than dry, unhealthy skin. Dry skin reflects UV light, so if you are not using an indoor tanning lotion, you can be wasting up to 50% of your tanning session.

Lotions help to smooth the surface layers or the skin to allow greater UV penetration for improved tanning results. Specially formulated indoor tanning lotions, like those made by California Tan, also provide advanced tanning technologies to aid the skin in developing a faster, darker tan.

**Believe it or not, you should never use a regular suntan lotion in a tanning bed. You should only use indoor tanning lotions. Regular suntan lotions will damage the acrylic material that tanning beds are made of. The acrylics are porous and expand when the bulbs heat up. In addition, using a regular tanning lotion in a tanning bed creates a film on the acrylic that ultimately restricts the tanning process and limits the tan you obtain.
What is the difference between a "bronzer" and an "intensifier" when it comes to tanning lotion?
Sep 29, 2017 12:01PM PDT
Intensifier/Accelerator:

These are use to naturally build your base tan. An intensifier(or sometimes called accelerator) is a lotion that will boost your melanin production to help develop your colour quickly. It has skin benefits like anti-aging, skin firming, and moisturizing. This lets you get the absolute most out of the tanning session you just purchased. This type of lotion is good for beginners.

There are 2 types of bronzers.

DHA Bronzer:

DHA (dihydroxyacetone) is a naturally derived ingredient that typically stems from sweet beets, and sugar cane. When applied to skin, this type of bronzer will give your skin instant colour and can help extend your tan to seven to ten days. DHA is clear and takes a few hours to develop on skin which is why it is recommended to wait a few hours before you shower . Even with a great starter lotion, it’s possible for your tan to plateau. This type of lotion is great for advanced tanners who may or may not be "plateauing".

**Many DHA lotions also have cosmetic bronzers added to them for a "right away' tan.

Cosmetic Bronzer:

A natural tan can take 24-48 hours to develop . Many people do not want to wait so long to see their tanning results. Products that include a cosmetic bronzer supplement a tan with a light self-tanner to deliver colour right away, as your natural tan develops underneath. This type of bronzer washes off in the shower. Don't worry! Your tan that is developing from the UV tan will not wash away with it! Great for beginner and/or advanced tanners.
Does cost matter in tanning lotion?
Jul 24, 2016 05:36PM PDT

Yes!  Just like in most products, the real cost in tanning lotion is what goes in it. Most would not say that a $0.99 hair conditioner from the drug store would be the same as a $40 one from a professional hair salon.  In general, the higher the price, the better skin care and/or tanning technology the lotion has. You can still achieve a tan with a cheap lotion that has a lot of bronzers, but without the added vitamins, moisture & antioxidants. These lotions are lacking most, if not all, skin care. This is where cost could be lowered depending on your needs.

Every lotion is different, just like every skin type. Have one of our salon associates help you find one for your needs and you’ll be much happier with your results and your skin will thank you.

Alternating Your Tanning Lotion?
Feb 13, 2017 06:05AM PST
How many of you just use the same shampoo, every day? Or lipstick, or eyeliner? I'm guessing very few of you. People mix those products up because the body becomes adjusted to the same products and results start to diminish. Or in some cases, it's just a nice feeling to try something different. It should be no different with tanning lotions. Alternating between a few products will provide the best results, and provide some variety for clients to enjoy. Many customers like to alternate between lotions with bronzers, and without (intensifiers).
Why Use Facial Lotions?
Feb 13, 2017 06:05AM PST
Do you want wrinkles? Of course not, and neither do we. The skin on our face is much different than the rest of our body, so naturally, a product designed for the face is going to work best. One of the main differences, is they load the facial product up with much higher levels of vitamins and other anti-oxidants that will help prevent fine lines and wrinkles.

To put these levels in a full bottle that you use all over your body would make the bottle very expensive, but when done in a small bottle just for use on your face where it's really needed, it's not cost-prohibited. From .10 cents per session, you should always be using a good facial lotion.

Even if you do not tan your face, we have some tanning lotions that will help get your face gradually darker without the use of UV. These facials have bronzers in them. Before applying your facial lotion, we recommend removing your make up. Your'e more than welcome to use our restrooms at SunScape to remove your make up. We also have a facial cleansing wipe called "facemate" you can purchase for less than the cost of a lotion packette that will help prep your skin for your lotion and tan. It also helps to exfoliate and get rid of any dead skin cells to promote a flawless, even tan.
What is the shelf life of my tanning lotion?
Sep 30, 2017 08:47PM PDT
The shelf life of each product after opening is printed on the bottle using the same symbol as all other cosmetics - a little open jar symbol with a number in it identifying the lifetime of the product in months (after opening)

Of course, you can still use your lotion after the one year but the effectiveness of the melanin boosting ingredients will decrease with time. Many of our high end lotions contain active ingredients that can only stay fresh for a limited time.
Tanning product tips

The first and most important tip to give you is to always be sure to speak with a tanning consultant at one of our 7 locations. They will be able to go over the best products for your skin type that will give your skin its maximum results. Since we all have different skin types and possible allergies to ingredients, it is best to get their expert advice before making your purchase.

We offer multiple categories of lotions to provide the perfect lotion for all of our client’s preferences. They will also enhance tanning results by helping you to tan up to 70% faster!

  • Intensifier lotions are products that develop your tan naturally without many added ingredients. Many have skin care ingredients that will help build that great base tan.
  • Bronzer lotions; we offer two kinds of bronzers, some have DHA as an ingredient and the others will not. DHA is an ingredient in sunless tanning products and bronzers and is often derived from plant sources such as sugar beets and sugar cane. DHA bronzers will boost your colour while the natural tan is developing. Natural bronzer lotions that do not contain DHA are purely cosmetic. Make sure to wipe your hands after using DHA bronzers! Our hands do not react to bronzers..and can turn orange from DHA!
  • The first thing I do is apply my facial tanning lotion to my face, neck and the skin on my upper chest. This lotion is specifically made for this more sensitive area of skin, and you’ll be less likely to get acne because of this.
  • Next, I apply lotion over every part of my body that will be exposed during my tanning session. It’s very important to only use indoor tanning lotion when tanning in a tanning bed. Not only will you have better tanning results with indoor tanning lotion, but you will protect the bed from damage.
  • After tanning,(and if using a DHA bronzer), I wait at least a couple of hours before I shower, and then I use a PH balanced soap that does not strip my skin of moisture.
  • After my shower, I use one of the delicious Hemp Nation tan extenders to keep my skin super moisturized.
  • I drink plenty of water to moisturize my skin from the inside out. Moisturize through the day when skin feels dry. Dry skin exfoliates much faster than moisturized skin, so it’s very important to keep your skin moisturized to keep your skin glowing!
How to prolong your tan with lotion
Sep 29, 2017 11:59AM PDT
You get a tan when the sun stimulates the production of a pigment called melanin in your skin, which colours the top layer. This layer sheds approximately every two weeks, so to ensure that all your skin cells are at the very start of their cycle, exfoliate your skin before your UV session. Dry skin exfoliates itself faster!

Maintain it. While you are building that terrific tan, moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! Keep your skin healthy! Using a high-end lotion that is specifically formulated with hydrating and skin-repairing ingredients is essential for proper skin care and to help achieve a healthier-looking, longer lasting tan.Tan extenders should be applied after each shower, after tanning, and any time during the day you feel your skin is dry. By simply keeping your skin moisturized you can nearly double the length of your tan and keep your skin looking younger for years to come.

Tan extenders have specific ingredients that are formulated with tanned skin in mind, They have ingredients that keep the tanning process going for hours after your session is complete!

SunScape carries a wide variety of high end products to ensure your tan lasts longer and skin stays stronger.
